Our Easter Stay at Gorwell Farm Cottages Dorset

We were lucky enough to stay at Gorwell Farm in a cottage over the Easter Holidays. Gorwell Farm is situated in a valley two miles up a hill from the pretty village of Abbotsbury on the South West Dorset Coast. The approach to the farm is down nearly a mile and half long track, it is secluded and utterly beautiful. I have stayed in numerous holiday cottages through out the UK but I can honestly say that Gorwell Farm has surpassed all in terms of location and truly stunning views!

There are six holiday cottages at Gorwell; we stayed in Mead Cottage, which has the best views over the valley. Each morning the girls had the opportunity to join in with a few activities around the farm. We would meet Farmer John along with the farm dogs Pebbles, Chessil and Pepper, and help bring in Milly the horse from her field and lead her up to her stable. One morning we were lucky enough to be able to watch the farrier put on Milly’s new shoes, the girls were utterly fascinated by the process once they were reassured it didn’t hurt Milly!

Our other important job, in the mornings, was to check and see whether the chickens had laid any eggs, we were never disappointed! We had so many eggs we had to bring half a dozen home with us! With it being lambing time, the girls were even invited to have a go at bottle-feeding the lambs, which they absolutely loved!

There is also a tennis court at Gorwell Farm, so before we were allowed to go anywhere in the morning we had to have a game of tennis! You don’t even need to take your own racquets or balls as you can borrow them from the farm. As well as the tennis court, there is a small undercover play area with skittles and table tennis.

The girls’ favourite bit, however, was the ‘Jolly Roger’ play area that had swings and a pirate’s ship with small slides. This was opposite our cottage so the girls enjoyed the freedom of playing outside by themselves whilst we could keep an eye on them from the kitchen window. That was one of the great things about our cottage stay at Gorwell Farm- with only a small amount of farm vehicles the girls were able to go completely free range and roam about without us having to worry about them.
